About Checkers and Rally’s

This fast food joint is US’s one of the largest drive-thru restaurants that specialize in hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, and milkshakes. It has 784 joints in 28 states of US and District of Columbia. Though Checkers and Rally’s started as two separate companies, back in 1986 in Alabama Jim Mattei established the Checkers and went public in 1991. In Kentucky, 1985 Rally’s was founded, and it absorbed few drive-thrus before being sold to CKE restaurant.

In 1999 CKE sold Rally’s to Checkers and the companies merged. Before the merging Checkers catered to the Southeast and northeast of the country while Rally’s served on the Midwest. Despite their mergers, Checkers still use the name Rally’s for its customers in California and Midwest, while Checkers in Southeast and Northeast.

In between, there have been many changes in the company ownership, but in 2017 Checkers sold its rights for $525 million to Oak Hill Capital Partner and had decided to expand its franchise to the Western part of the country. In 2018 the fast-food company has stated they plan to open over two-dozen places throughout the Western states and into Pittsburgh.

For their expansion strategy, the company has used unique and different promotional methods over the years and between 1999 and 2000, Checkers and Rally’s used the slogan ‘High-Performance Human Fuel.’ Their ad Rap Cat that featured a stuffed cat doing a rap song about the food joint chain became viral in 2007 after it was posted on YouTube. As part of their promotion Checkers and Rally’s also gave their customers to buy a basketball jersey for their cats. The jersey had slots for the cat’s can have their tail and legs. However, the company received flak from animal rights activist but the fast food company defended their stance.

In 2014 a new character was introduced for their promotion, Mr. Bag. In 2016 rapper turned restaurateur Rick Ross partnered with the fast food company and in 2017 opened the first joint under Checkers and Rally’s in Miami.
