About Regal Cinemas
Established in 1989 in Knoxville, Tennessee, Regal cinema began its rapid rise under Mike Campbell as the CEO. Many of the larger cinemas had the premium cafes on the premises which later came to be known as Café Del Moro. All these cinemas were modeled in an upscale manner, much ahead of their times.
The aggressive expansion had its upsides and pitfalls too. The expansion was fuelled by buying up smaller theatres such as the original Cobb Theatres, RC Theatres, and Cleveland-based National Theatre Corp and building big modern multiplexes. One famous example is the combination of Regal Cinemas and Act III Theatres.
But on the downside, due to its rapid expansion, Regal Cinemas ran itself into bankruptcy by 2001. It was forced to merge into Edwards and United Artists Chains.
United Artists Theatres
The United Artists Theatres was set up in 1924 Initially linked to the namesake movie studio found by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith the chain separated from it in 1970. The Naify Brothers purchased United Artists Theatres in 1940, and also another called the San Francisco Theatres. This grew to establish itself in the area. UAC also pioneered the Cable television and brought out several of the smaller television companies.
This family-owned chain in California was started in 1930. It grew to become one of the most popular chains and by 1997 had 560 screens in 90 locations. But an ill-planned expansion plan brought the company to bankruptcy by 2000.
As of date, Regal Cinemas is part of the Cineworld Group. IT prides its self for its diverse set of theatres spread across the United States. This totals up to 7,306 screens in 558 theatres in 43 states as of June 2018.
